More Pie

The thrill of June, when home ec teachers have time to do home ec-ish things. Including making up words, apparently. Today's pie is "Ricotta Pie with Chocolate and Toasted Almonds," inspired by the leftover ricotta from last night's baked ziti. Not your typical grocery store ricotta fare; the good, hand-dipped fresh stuff that is now available to us at our new Italian grocery store. Mmmmm, could not allow this to go to waste.

Similar to a cannoli, it is pure creamy chocolatey goodness in a crust.

Pie & Rigatoni

Ah, the flexibility of summer. First of all, time to bake! Time to try new recipes! Recipes like... Oatmeal Raisin Pie!

Oh. My. Goodness. Soooo delicious! By the way, if you are a pie fan I highly recommend the cookbook pictured above. Not only does it have 300 recipes, it also includes a lot of terrific extra information on the art of pie. Mmmmm, pie...

Being able to work at home also makes other things possible, such as adoption of a new kitten. Introducing "Riggie" (short for Rigatoni)!

What a sweetie! He definitely gets into everything, so for now we're trying to make sure someone is home with him a majority of the time. He's a little love bug, even if he does sit on my keyboard while I'm trying to type!

Faith

Today as we were leaving to go grocery shopping, a kid ("kid" being the word I apparently use to describe anyone under thirty now, a sure sign of getting old - 'scuse me, "mature") on a motorcycle pulled up; I thought maybe he needed directions or something. Nope. He had found my husband's wallet in the street BLOCKS away from our house and was returning it.

How terrific is that?

Faith in humanity, reaffirmed.

63

Okay, when I was a kid - which was not THAT long ago - by the third day of summer break our faces were practically melting off from the heat (or possible exposure to the Ark of the Covenant, hard to say). Today is the third day of summer break and it is 63 DEGREES outside!

Not that I want my face to melt off or anything, but something a little warmer would be appreciated.

2012-2013 in the Rearview

Loaded up the car, and I drove away from 2012-2013! Actually, I like this one better:

Hello, summer!

House Anniversary

Tuesday was our one-year anniversary in our new house. These were waiting for me when I arrived home from work:

Best husband ever : ).

Signs of Summer...

A few signs that summer is almost here...

1. I was finally able to hang a "summer" Snoopy flag outside my classroom!

2. Last round of prayer cards for teachers! I love the flip flop scrapbook paper I used for these envelopes:

3. One hot kitty!

Only 10 more school days! Woo hoo!

May Currently

A new Currently!

Listening - it's pretty quiet inside and out right now, but I can hear the birds tweeting outside. Finally, Spring!

Loving - there are only 20 school days left! Hip Hip, Hooray!

Thinking - my students carry an egg "baby" for two days during the Child Care unit. I don't trust middle schoolers with raw eggs, so the eggs have to be hollowed. I just finished blowing out my last batch of eggs for the year! (And, since I'm designing a rotating two-year curriculum, I won't have any at all next year!)

Wanting - I've been working on cleaning out the clutter from my new classrooms all year long - I very, very, very much want to have this accomplished by the end of this school year!!!

Needing - this is the time of year teachers are holding onto their wits by their fingertips! Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...

Bucket List - Gotta replace the curtains that came with the house! Also, tons of sewing projects to work on. And of course, that pesky second year curriculum isn't going to write itself. Beyond that, plenty of fun things planned for this summer! Trips to visit family, a DCI contest, a Yo-Yo Ma concert (yes, another), and several other events I'm looking forward to.

20 more school days!

Great Minds Think Alike!

My fabulous SIL (who lives many hours away) posted the following photo of her kitties "helping" her with a sewing project:

If you look closely at the fabric underneath the cat on the left, it is the same fabric that I used for my second tool belt! Crazier still, the black and white fabric on the far left was what I almost used for the contrast - I just thought it might be too overwhelming for its intended purpose. Great minds think alike! And as she said, we obviously both have great taste!
